Gesine Bänfer shawm, bombard, bagpipe lives in Freiburg in the Black Forest in Germany. After playing the saxophone in Big Bands and on lots of weddings with a dance combo, she specialised in early woodwind instruments. She learned shawm from Katharina Arfken in Basle and has collected many depictions of the mediaeval wind band. The aim to show these fascintating pictures to a wider audience, led to Multi Media Projects - the computer controlled presentation on big screen. Currently she is working on an iconographical database of the material - hoping to find support, to publish it in future. With the early music ensemble "Les haulz et les bas" she has won prizes at the Bruges Early Music Festival, as a bagpiper she won the duo competition at St. Chartier Folk Festival and with her crossover project Contraband she is prizewinner in the categories 'best folk rock band' and 'best wind instrumentalists' at the German Pop Foundation 2007. She is mother of four wonderful children, and when she's not travelling she teaches the children of Freiburg to play mediaeval music. She loves photography and taking long walks in the black forest. |
