The beginning of the musical renaissance is hard to pinpoint. Some would say it started with the invention of the bass line. No sooner did composers such as Guillaume Du Fay and Johannes Ockeghem start to experiment with this new sound but brass instrument-makers came up with a new bass instrument for the alta capella - the sackbut or trombone. This is a time journey from the high shawm sounds of the Gothic era to the rich polyphony of the Renaissance. With compositions by the Monk of Salzburg, Guillaume Dufay, Johannes Ciconia, John Dunstable, Alexander Agricola etc. (CD available)
